Non-Nordic Roma

The final years of the 1960s witnessed a migration of some 10,000 Romani from Poland, Hungary, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and other parts of Eastern Europe. This group is known as Non-Nordic Romani. In accordance with the prevailing political ideals, a strongly assimilative policy was pursued from their arrival in Sweden. They were encouraged to abandon their former lifestyle and were cared for by society, including the taking into care of many Romani children by the social services.

The non-Nordic Roma

The non-Nordic Roma come from several European countries, and began to arrive in Sweden towards the close of the 1960s.
